Ecuador hosts the world's smallest orchid

Lou Jost American scientist discovered a new species of orchid in the western Andes, in the "Cerro Candelaria Reserve" near the town of Baños.

This 2.1mm small flower of the genus wide Platystele, becoming the world's smallest orchid, surpassing the record of jungermannioides Platystele orchid whose flowers are 2.5 mm. This new species yet to be named is characterized by its leaves and transparent petals.

To Jost, this is his 60th orchid discovered in Ecuador, who said that "people think that everything has been discovered, but much more," thus demonstrating that it is still possible to find new species.

In Ecuador there are over 4600 species of orchids unique to our country, proving once again the enormous biodiversity we have.
